DOCUMENT MANAGEMENT

A major truck manufacturer requested a new XML-based Document Management System (DMS) and a new E-Document reader to replace their existing SGML-based third-party software applications.

The primary concern was that the existing system was too disorganized and labor-intensive, and required complete reloads of electronic publications to maintain their extranet and Internet sites.

The client needed the new system to support the existing Heavy Truck Dealership Service Information System in a more efficient manner, as well as replace the proprietary E-Book formats with an open-standard format.

A further consideration was user connectivity. The SGML-based DMS application was a Client-Server system, which limited usage to in-house users. The new XML-based DMS is an extranet system, which allows access to the DMS thru the Internet. This allowed users in Michigan and Pennsylvania to share a centralized DMS.
